Chancres are those firm, small, round, painless sores that appear on the genital areas like the vagina, penis and anus. They appear on people infected with the STD called Syphilis in its early stages. These bumps are not itchy at first and would seem to heal by itself in 3 to 6 weeks time. Only to return with a vengeance! In the second stages of Syphilis an outbreak of rashes appears all over the body. Rough, red and reddish brown spots appear on the palms of the hands and on the bottoms of the feet. The sight of these rashes is enough to make you itch! These are accompanied by other symptoms like fever, swollen lymph glands, itchy sore throat, patchy hair loss, headaches, weight loss, muscle pains and unexplained fatigue. In the latent stage of Syphilis, these rashes may seem to go away but the infected person will have the disease forever. If left untreated, the disease could progress to more damaging medical conditions like paralysis, blindness, dementia and eventually death.
Another itch you shouldn't scratch is from the sores caused by Herpes. The Herpes Simplex Virus 1 and 2 is the culprit behind the STD Herpes. Symptoms of this disease come in the form of a group of small painful sores or blisters around the genital areas. The first outbreak usually occurs during the first 2 weeks of infection. The sores will heal within 2 to 4 weeks only to recur in greater numbers. These sores can easily be mistaken for insect bites or a simple allergy. Once you scratch them, they could develop into open sores making it more prone for infection and transmission. These sores are so infectious and recurrent that the person infected can suffer 4 to 5 outbreaks in a year!
Gonorrhea and Chlamydia are called the silent disease. There are no visible sores or rash to scratch but the victims of this infection experience a burning, itchy sensation every time they urinate. The bacteria causing these infections invade the cervix and urethra causing abnormal vaginal discharges, extreme pain during sexual intercourse and bleeding between menstrual periods in women. For men, the symptoms are similar. They also experience abnormal discharges from the penis, burning and itching around the penis, a burning sensation while urinating and while having sex and pain and swelling of the testicles. These diseases could also be transmitted thru oral sex - so that itchy sore throat could be a symptom!
Once you are sexually active there is no way you should ignore that itch! That something itchy could already be a symptom that you are infected with STD!
